Testing seed before you plant your garden is quite easy:

  1. Soak 10 to 20 seeds overnight.
  2. Dampen a paper towel and place in a glass or steel pie dish (do not use aluminum).
  3. Dampen another paper towel and lay on the corn.
  4. Insert pan in large, loose plastic bag and place somewhere warm (70 -80 ).

Can you germinate corn in a paper towel?

I pre-sprout a few seeds on paper towels for various reasons. I tear off a piece of paper towel, write the name of the seed and the date on the towel, lay about a third more seeds than I plan to grow on half the paper, cover this with the other half, then drip enough water on the covered seeds to wet the paper through.

The magnesium activates the enzymes in the seed which break down the inbuilt food supply so the plant will germinate and establish much more quickly. Simply add a teaspoon of Epsom salt to a watering can and water the newly sown seeds. This only needs to be done once.
