Olla irrigation is a simple technique that is rather inexpensive and easy to execute. Ollas are buried in soil and filled with water. Dry soil pulls water through the porous unglazed pots, moistening the soil surrounding the olla which irrigates the plants.

Therefore, olla irrigation is extremely water efficient and prevents excessive evaporation and water runoff. It is also better for the root systems of the plants. It promotes deep watering and dense root growth which facilitates more efficient nutrient and water uptake.
